Why it exists

Too many good episodes, not enough commutes.

You follow more shows than you can keep up with, and show notes only tell you who the guest is. What you want is the version a well-read friend would give you:

01here's the thesis,
02here's what's worth learning,
03here's what's still worth thinking about.

That's PodPings. Two minutes per episode, for every show you follow.

Hermès — the company that grew by refusing to grow

Abstract

Hermès' scarcity isn't a marketing posture; it is a manufacturing constraint the company deliberately never solved, and it is the entire reason the margin exists.

Summary

Ben and David trace Hermès from an 1837 Paris harness workshop to one of the most profitable companies in luxury. The argument running through the episode is that almost every decision that looks like restraint, from refusing to automate leather goods to turning down growth that would dilute the brand, is actually the business model. They cover six generations of family control, the near-miss with LVMH, and why the bags customers can't simply buy are what make everything else on the shelves sell.

Interesting ideas
01
Supply discipline is the productEach Birkin and Kelly is made start to finish by a single artisan, and new artisans take years to train. Capacity can only grow as fast as that pipeline, so demand permanently outruns supply, and pricing power follows without the company having to push for it.
02
The scarce bag sells everything elseThe bags people wait for are rarely bought cold. They tend to be offered to clients who already have a purchase history, so scarcity at the top of the range quietly drives sales of scarves, ties and homeware, which are far easier to make more of.
03
Family control bought a longer clockWhen LVMH quietly built up a stake of more than 20% around 2010, the family pooled over half the shares into a holding company locked up for 20 years. That structure is what lets Hermès keep declining the volume growth public markets would otherwise demand.
04
Patience is easy to copy, and almost nobody doesMost luxury groups grow by adding stores, licences and entry-level products. Hermès grows leather goods only as fast as it can train people, which caps short-term growth but means the brand is never stretched. Any competitor could do the same; few with outside shareholders manage it.
Questions worth thinking about

If the scarcity is really a production limit, what happens to the brand the day Hermès can train artisans faster?

Which other businesses have a capacity constraint that is quietly their moat?
